In Nicosia, the new Medical School and Health Sciences Building “Nikos K. Shakolas” emerges as a calm architectural presence of light, shadow, and natural continuity.
Designed for the University of Cyprus by SV60 Arquitectos and Formit-Gabrielides Architects, the 8,500 m² project received the 1st prize in the architectural competition and is LEED Platinum certified.
With the contribution of Façade Solutions, the façade gains rhythm, depth, and architectural precision, transforming the building envelope into a living surface of light and shadow.
Its architecture seeks to connect the surrounding urban structures with the natural landscape, placing emphasis on timeless values: mass, void, light, materiality, and the relationship between people and space. This is not a building that imposes itself on its surroundings, but rather a calm and meaningful landmark within the campus, designed to inspire students, academics, visitors, and staff.

ARCHITECTURE THAT EMBRACES LIGHT AND NATURE

At the core of the project lies the idea of a unified building volume that opens inward, creating a courtyard with a strong natural presence. This internal courtyard functions as a small landscape core within the building itself, offering spatial quality, visual connection, and a different experience of the educational environment.

A FAÇADE WITH RHYTHM, SHADOW, AND ENVIRONMENTAL INTELLIGENCE

Through a custom application of ELVIAL FS50 by Façade Solutions, the façade of the building gains rhythm, depth, and architectural precision. The envelope operates as a continuous protective grid against solar radiation, with horizontal and vertical shading elements adapted to the orientation of each side. Through this detailed and almost artistic approach, Façade Solutions transforms the façade into a living surface of light and shadow, where technical excellence meets the poetic power of architecture.

EDUCATION, RESEARCH, AND EVERYDAY LIFE IN A UNIFIED SPACE

The architecture of the building is not limited to functional organization. It creates spaces for meeting, pausing, and transition, where the educational process meets the everyday life of the university. The outdoor lobby, the plaza beneath the building, and the covered areas shaped by the topography can host different activities, from open-air classes to exhibitions and student gatherings.

SUSTAINABILITY WITH ARCHITECTURAL DEPTH

LEED Platinum certified, the new Medical School building in Nicosia reflects a meaningful approach to sustainable design, where architecture, light, and energy performance operate as a unified whole. The use of natural light, shading, and passive design principles contributes to reduced energy consumption and to the creation of a more comfortable, efficient, and environmentally responsible building.
